4 AAC in Action (CEUs)

Communication Transitions: AAC Assessment & Customization as Needs Evolve (4A009.2)

Description

As people change, so do their communication needs, communication style, and vocabulary. This is no different for AAC users whose needs and abilities will change over time. Too often, a person’s communication system doesn’t evolve with them, which may lead to increased frustration, decreased communication, and even device abandonment. This course will explore dynamic AAC assessment strategies to support AAC users through transitions to ensure that their communication system continues to meet their needs. Participants will examine how to support evolving communication needs due to a shift in setting (i.e. moving from school to a day program or employment), status changes (i.e. cognitive, physical, or medical changes), and changes in access needs (i.e. changing from switch to eye gaze access), ensuring continuity in communication access. This course will provide an overview of when and why assessment and re-assessment is valuable, introduce resources for dynamic assessment, and then guide learners in applying that knowledge to several fictional case studies. r.

Learning Outcomes:

- Identify at least 3 types of transitions where an AAC user may benefit from re-evaluation of their communication system.

- Describe 2 components of dynamic AAC assessment for transitions.

- Discuss the purpose and benefits of dynamic AAC assessment for transitional periods in life
