Adapting Communication: AAC Assessment for Speech and Voice Changes

Description
This course will explore how speech-language pathologists can complete dynamic, person-centered augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) assessments for adults with acquired speech loss due to surgeries (like glossectomy, laryngectomy, tracheotomy) or neurological conditions (like myasthenia gravis, stroke, muscular dystrophy, ALS) resulting in dysarthria or dysphonia. Learners will examine case studies, discover tools and resources to guide the assessment process, and learn strategies for matching AAC features to communication needs in both short-term and long-term scenarios. The session will also highlight how to document success and plan sustainable next steps for ongoing communication support.

Learning Outcomes:
- Identify key components of dynamic AAC assessments for adults with acquired speech loss.
- Describe how AAC assessments can address both current and future communication needs through feature matching and trials that align with individual abilities and environments.
- List observable signs of communication success during AAC assessment for adults with acquired speech loss.
